(Liatris scariosa) Native Perennial. Add vertical interest and late season color with these purple feathery button blooms that open from top to bottom in an 18” long span atop erect, leafy flower stems. A magnet for bees, hummingbirds, and butterflies. Prefers average, sandy to rocky soil. Heat and drought tolerant. An easy-to-grow addition to the prairie, native and pollinator garden.
To Grow:
Direct sow in early fall, press seed into soil of well-prepared seed bed but do not cover as it needs light to germinate. Cold stratified seeds can also be started indoors under lights 6-8 weeks before last frost. To cold stratify, mix seeds with moistened seed starting mix or sand and place it in the refrigerator for 8 weeks, then press seeds into the soil but do not cover them with soil because they need light to germinate. Transplant seedlings outdoors after last frost. Water regularly.
