(Silybum marianum) Annual/Biennial. A renowned and versatile medicinal herb that grows three to seven feet tall, boasting spiny, variegated leaves and a solitary, showy purple flower. All parts of the plant have been utilized for centuries for both culinary and medicinal purposes. The leaves can be cooked as a potherb and have a bitter yet slightly sweet flavor profile. Flowers are highly attractive to beneficial insects and birds.

To Grow:
For first year flowers, start indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost. Direct sow into fertile, well-draining soil after last frost. Transplant after last frost. Performs best in full sun. Deadhead to prevent self-sowing.
