(Lupinus Polyphyllus) Perennial. The Russell Lupine is a perennial plant known for its tall, spiky flower stalks and vibrant, showy blooms that stand tall and sturdy above the meadow and cottage garden. It features dense clusters of colorful pea-shaped flowers that range in color from purple and deep blue to pink, white, and yellow. The foliage is composed of palmate leaves with several leaflets. An excellent old fashioned cut flower and provides food for hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies. Thrives in dry to average sandy soils.
To Grow:
Start indoors 8-10 weeks before last. Press seeds into the soil but do not cover them because they need light to germinate. Keep seeds moist until germination. Transplant outdoors after last frost when soil can be worked. Prefers average, well-draining soil. Prefers dry, well-draining soil. Avoid overhead watering as it may rot leaves.
